This collection is a tribute to embracing femininity as strength and rejecting the continuance of centuries of repressive dress practices. My created look, consisting of three pieces, 1. a felted jacket with paper lace appliques, 2. a felted chiffon corset, and 3. hand-knit capri leggings all have elements of this dichotomy. I wanted to mimic classic kinds of plated armor in different ways and form softer materials into holding stiffer structures: the corset has pintucks and piping to emulate the ornamental metalwork, the pants with the geometric shaping of the rib and silver accents, and the jacket with grid-like geometry of the collar and peplum as well as the three raised bands on each sleeve. My color palette is mainly neutral as I wanted to focus more on the materiality and silhouettes, as well as highlight my initial inspiration, armor. Exploring femininity has always been my main creative interest, and “Lace me up, Lift me down” honors the complexities of womanhood, finding the grey areas that lie within the spectrum of expression.
