As a first generation Turkish American, I’ve always been enamored with the craft culture both within my family and also in Turkey as a whole. Whenever I visit, I always come back with new textiles and handmade items that inspire me to implement new methods of creating. My grandmothers gifted me many of their handmade tablecloths, napkins, fabrics, bedsheets: decades of accumulated craftsmanship that has been forgotten, sitting in their closets collecting dust. My goal for this project was to honor the talented women in my life as well as these timeless crafts that are unfortunately on the decline due to their time consuming nature. Through hand crocheted lacework, embroidery and knitting, I aim to bring a modern lens to traditional women's work by incorporating textures and silhouettes for current feminine expression while paying tribute to the rich craft history attributed to centuries of talented women.
